The AI frenzy losing steam leaves bitcoin less volatile than South Korean stocks.

South Korea’s Kospi index has slumped nearly 25% in just four weeks. Options markets now show the index as at least twice as risky as bitcoin — a decentralized cryptocurrency frequently criticized for extreme volatility. Kospi’s options-based 30-day implied volatility index has surged to an annualized 81%, more than double BVIV, the bitcoin equivalent, at around 38%. The underlying driver is the collapse of Korean retail investors who chased AI returns through margin trading and leveraged ETFs, facing forced liquidations now totaling more than $2 trillion over less than three months. For bitcoin supporters, being steadier than the Kospi is a notable, if backhanded, milestone — though BTC remains twice as volatile as the S&P 500, whose VIX sits below 20%. That gap between BVIV and the VIX remains the true threshold bitcoin bulls are watching. Bitcoin’s reversal attempt this week has failed: the price dropped back below its 50-day moving average after Tuesday’s CPI bounce stalled at $65,200, returning to the downtrend channel held since June. FxPro’s Kuptsikevich flags support at $61,000 and $59,000 before the channel floor near $56,000. Nansen analysts are not sounding alarm bells: wallets that typically move first in geopolitical flare-ups have not meaningfully rotated into stablecoins — consistent with prior Middle East escalations where short-term leveraged longs get flushed and then accumulation resumes. WTI crude is on track for its biggest weekly gain since April, up nearly 12%, adding fresh inflation risk that could undermine the read on Tuesday’s CPI. And Marex describes the Clarity Act vote happening in Washington today as “the regulatory clarity the institutional bid has been waiting for.”

This $28 million ether bet aims to profit from pure market chaos.

A monstrous volatility trade hit the ether options market this week: a 15,000-contract long straddle involving the simultaneous purchase of 7,500 calls and 7,500 puts at the $1,875 strike, all expiring July 24. The total notional value of the position — calculated by multiplying the 15,000 contracts by ETH’s price at execution — is roughly $28 million. The trader paid $852,000 in premium to establish it, which is the maximum possible loss if ether stays range-bound through the expiry date. The trade makes money if ether moves sharply in either direction. As Options Insights’ Imran Lakha explained this week, ETH faces none of the dealer-gamma brake that caps bitcoin above $70,000 — meaning ether can “rip much faster” when a catalyst arrives, in either direction. The straddle buyer is not expressing a directional view; they are buying volatility itself as an asset. The position profits from vega — sensitivity to a rise in implied volatility — and gamma — sensitivity to the acceleration of price moves — rather than from a specific price target. With ether’s ETH/BTC ratio having just crossed above its 100-day moving average for the first time since January, while the 200-day average remains a strong resistance level above, the straddle acknowledges that the next big ether move could go either way from here. The maximum gain is theoretically unlimited — volatility itself has no upper bound — while the break-even on the upside is roughly $1,932 and on the downside near $1,818, meaning ether needs to move outside that range by July 24 for the trade to be in profit at expiry.

Bitcoin slips to $63,000 as the chip rout goes global.

Bitcoin fell to around $63,000 on Friday, down 1.7% over 24 hours and 2.2% on the week, as a deepening global selloff in chipmakers dragged risk assets lower. Ether held better at $1,836, still up 2.4% over seven days. Hyperliquid led the losses across the market, down 8% on the day and 12% on the week. Nasdaq 100 futures dropped 1.8% and S&P 500 contracts fell 0.9% as a semiconductor ETF slid 3% in premarket trading. Taiwanese stocks fell into a technical correction and Asia’s main benchmark hit a two-month low. The question driving it is the one that has hung over global markets all month: chipmakers are under scrutiny over whether the hundreds of billions that AI hyperscalers are spending will produce the returns to justify their valuations, and TSMC’s results this week did not settle it. Crypto is following the same current it has all quarter. This week’s soft inflation print gave bitcoin a lift toward $65,000, but that was a macro trade, and the chip selloff is pulling the other way. Adding a new layer of pressure: Trump alleged that China tampered with the 2020 U.S. election, sending the Australian dollar lower and adding a fresh geopolitical overhang on top of an already fraught Iran situation. WTI crude futures are on track for their biggest weekly gain since April — up nearly 12% — putting the cool June inflation read at risk of looking stale by the time the Fed meets July 28–29. Bitcoin’s reversal attempt this week has technically failed, with the price dropping back below its 50-day moving average and returning to the downtrend channel that has held since June. Support is flagged at $61,000 and $59,000 before the channel floor near $56,000.
